China to test Loongson CPU in Supercomputers later this year

Government backed research institutes in China will begin testing the locally developed Loogson processor in supercomputing scenarios later this year. With a combined computational capacity of a 1000 trillion floating point operations per second (or 1 Petaflop), the hopes are that the new Dawning 6000 supercomputer ,  jointly developed by the Institute of Computing Technology (CAS) and the Dawning Information Industry Company (DIIC) will provide a future where China will no longer be dependent on what it describes as 'foreign technology'.
