MediaTek emerged as the dark horse of chip industry by becoming the one stop shop for mobile handset manufacturers—especially the Shanzhai—supplying chips, hardware, reference designs, software and real time technical support. But MediaTek, which once had control over 90% of phone market in mainland China, is now losing its grip because of a lack of hi-tech smartphone features. The US search giant Yahoo has come to MediaTek’s rescue.
